Accused of gunning down Richard Shotts as Shotts protected his family

33-year-old Shaun Fairman yesterday pleaded not guilty to shooting to death his father-in-law, 55-year-old Richard Shotts, on June 3rd in North Mahoning Township.

Fairman will be tried on charges of criminal homicide, two counts of aggravated assault, burglary, and receiving stolen property, all felonies.

The shooting occurred at a home near Trade City.  Fairman was separated from his wife, who with their children was living at the home, and Shotts and his wife were staying there to protect the family.  After the shooting, Fairman went through the house room-by-room looking for his wife and when he entered the room in which she was hiding, she shot him before he could shoot her, and then held him at bay until police arrived.
