A Hempfield, Westmoreland County, man is accused of firing 17 shots at state police on Thursday night.

Daniel Lee Ryan, age 44, is charged with 17 counts each of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and one count of terroristic threats.

Police say that at 10:30 Thursday night Ryan’s wife, Dawn, had fled the house after Daniel made threats against her while intoxicated. She fled to a neighbor’s house where she called the police. The police say they knew that there were guns in the house, and they asked Daniel to come outside.

Officers stayed at their cars outside the house, and then the shots began to ring out. More troopers arrived on scene. The incident stretched on from 10:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Overall 17 shots were counted. When Daniel didn’t respond to negotiators, police lobbed tear gas into the house.

Ryan is now in the Westmoreland County Prison with a $500,000 bond and a hearing set for October 18.
