IUP is moving forward with plans for a hotel next to the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.
This is a project that goes back years, to the development of the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex. University officials are quick to caution, the work isn’t over yet.
Even though they’ve decided to award the project to a Massachusetts development firm, it’s merely the beginning of another step in this process.
IUP's Vice President of Administration and Finance Dr. Cornelius Wooten said it could take five or six months for the developer to work through issues such as zoning.
The development proposal calls for the construction of a five-story Hilton Garden Inn on the ground adjacent to the KCAC. The hotel would include 136 rooms with a pool, exercise room and business center, among other upscale amenities. It would also include limited meeting space.
Officials said the booking of events and meetings would be separate, yet still work in tandem with the Kovalchick Complex.
While IUP would be involved in leasing the ground for the project, it would not be involved in the operation of the hotel.
If the plan is successful, officials said the hotel could open in August of 2014.
