MEETING SET FOR NUCLEAR WASTE DISPOSAL SITES
Army Corps of Engineers to hold public hearing in Armstrong County

11/16/2012

A public meeting has been scheduled on the Army Corps of Engineers progress at the Parks Township Shallow Land Disposal project in Armstrong County.  The meeting will be held at the Parks Township Volunteer Fire Department Hall in Vandergrift on Tuesday, November 27th at 7 p.m.

The Shallow Land Disposal Project encompasses 44 acres of land that is owned by BWX Technologies.  The prior owner of the land, Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation, conducted disposal of radioactive waste materials at the site.  BWZ is licensed to maintain the site to ensure the safety of workers there and the public.

Officials say there are ten trenches on the site containing contaminated soil and other waste materials.  They say the amount of waste found in the trenches is around 24,000 cubic yards.
