120,000 students would be affected by work stoppage

As expected, faculty at the fourteen state-owned universities approved a strike authorization in voting at the schools last week.  APSCUF, the faculty union, says 86 percent of its more than 6,000 members voted and 95 percent of them authorized the union to call a strike.  At this time, there are no plans to call a work stoppage.

The votes were tabulated on Friday inHarrisburg.  The union declined to disclose the results from each individual campus.

The last contract between APSCUF and the State System expired on June 30th, 2011 and the faculty has been working under its terms since then.  The current negotiations are for a four-year deal, at least two of which would already have passed by the time a new contract could be in place.

The next negotiating session is planned for December 11th.
