Groundbreaking isn’t scheduled until March of this year, but work has already started on the next phase of the Streetscape Project in Indiana.
Peoples Natural Gas workers are completing prep work along North 7th Street. All that work needs to be finished before the renovation of sidewalks in that area. Peoples Natural Gas has analyzed the age and condition of the pipes in that area and is replacing them at their own cost. The Streetscape project is worth around $13 million and the goal is the revitalization of downtown Indiana. The project is broken up into four segments.
The first segment, Phase A, was completed back in 2009 and focused on the 900 block of Philadelphia Street. Phase BI, which focused on the 500 block of Philadelphia Street, was completed this past fall. Phase B2 includes work on North 7th Street and the Vinegar Hill Steps. That project is fully funded and will begin in two months. The project will result in the realization of the Vinegar Hill Steps and a relaxed traffic pattern along North 7th Street, among other improvements. The final phase of the project is Phase C, which will include the 600, 700 and 800 blocks of Philadelphia Street.
Downtown Indiana is currently seeking funding for that phase of the project. If you’d like more information about the Streetscape project, you can call Downtown Indiana at 724-463-6110.
