Victim not yet publicly identified

Police have not yet released the identity, nor the sex or age of a person who was struck and killed by a freight train just before 6 o’clock last night in Derry Borough.

The westbound Norfolk Southern train was pulling 124 empty cars near Valley Street, where there are two adjacent rail lines. A Norfolk Southern spokesman did not provide details of the accident but did say the train crew blew the horn before striking the individual.  Firefighters blocked one lane of the road for about a half-mile stretch for several hours while police investigated.
