Anticipating the arrival of returning members of the the 420th Engineers Company, Indiana Borough workers early this morning put up American flags on the light pole along Philadelphia Street.
The troops will arrive in Indiana tomorrow between 4 and 4:30 PM, entering town from the east, traveling west along Philadelphia Street to 9th Street, then left on Oakland Avenue to 13th Street, which will be blocked off. They will turn onto Maple Street on the IUP campus and be reunited with their families at the IUP Memorial Fieldhouse.
Indiana Mayor George Hood is calling on all residents, and all of Indiana County, to turn out to greet the American heroes as they come back from a year’s deployment, the last eleven months of which were in Afghanistan.
While in country, the 420th Engineer Company was awarded 110 Combat Action Badges, four Combat Medical Badges, thirteen Purple Hearts, 28 Bronze Stars, one Bronze Star with Valor, eight Army Commendation Medals with Valor, and 112 Army Commendation Medals.
They completed more than 480 engineer clearance operations, sweeping roads and trails of explosive devices, and trained three Afghan Nation Army units to do the same. The unit arrived at Fort Bliss, Texas on January 25th.
