MAN ACCUSED OF ENTERING WORKPLACE WITH GUNS TURNS HIMSELF IN

5/23/2013

A man that police say walked into a Westmoreland County business with an AK-47 rifle and a handgun late Wednesday night has turned himself into police.  The incident sparked a short lockdown at schools in Blairsville and a day-long lockdown for the Torrance State Hospital.

Police say it happened around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday at Perma-Cast, a company in the Westmoreland Industrial Park, which manufactures mold castings.  28-year-old Matthew Smith, a worker who had been suspended from his job at the facility, showed up and told employees to leave or get away.

Police arrived on the scene right after Smith had left the area.  He surrendered to police in Monroeville yesterday afternoon and was charged with risking a catastrophe, simple assault, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct.  He was taken to the Westmoreland County Jail and awaits a preliminary hearing on June 4th.
