IUP swept a basketball doubleheader last night, the women blasting Bloomsburg, 73-46 and the men beating Bowie State, 78-65.
In the women’s game, Carolyn Appleby scored 19 of her 23 points in the first half as IUP took control with the transition game and low-post feeds in the half-court. Appleby’s slashing drives and solid work off the bench by Maura D’Anna, with a career-high 18, led the Crimson Hawks to their third win without a loss. IUP led by 24 at the half, saw that led cut to 14, but regained its footing late in the third quarter to lead by 17 heading into the final period. IUP’s bench contributed 30 points in the win and the Hawks outrebounded Bloomsburg 43-25. Lauren Wolosik scored 12 for IUP.
In the nightcap, Coach Joe Lombardi’s Crimson Hawks battled an athletic Bowie State team to come away with a 13-point win. Cobo Diaz scored 25 pints and grabbed 18 rebounds, Dante Lombardi added 18 points, and redshirt freshman Armoni Foster scored 11 as IUP took an early 17-point lead, saw it shrink to three, then surged at the end to win, 78-65.
The IUP women will play next on Tuesday at Cheyney. The men see their next action against Westminster at the KCAC on Monday night.
