The Penguins couldn’t jump into the NHL Eastern Conference second Wild Card position last night, losing to Toronto in overtime. Paul Steigerwald recaps the game.
The Penguins and Detroit Red Wings both have 84 points, but the Red Wings hold the second Wild Card position for now, with two more wins and a game in hand. The Red Wings will host the Washington Capitals tonight and then the Penguins will play Detroit at PPG Paints Arena on Thursday night. With a win tonight, the Capitals would jump ahead of both Detroit and Pittsburgh.
Third place in the Metro Division is also in play. The Islanders are a point ahead of the Penguins and two points up on Washington. If the Caps win tonight and the Islanders lose to the Rangers, the Caps would hold Metro Three while the Islanders would have a tentative grip on Wild Card Two.
After playing the Red Wings on Thursday, the Penguins conclude the regular season with games against the Bruins, Predators, and Islanders.
