The Penguins didn’t play yesterday but there was plenty of action involving their playoff chase. The Washington Capitals beat Detroit, 2-1 to pass both the Red Wings and the Penguins into the second wild card slot by a point. The Pens hold the tiebreaker over the Red Wings.
The New York Islanders upset the Rangers, 4-2 to get a firmer grip on third place in the Metro Division, where they now lead the Penguins by three points. The Flyers were belted by the Canadiens, 9-3 to remain a point behind the Pens. The Devils and Sabres were both eliminated from playoff contention with losses.
The Penguins play the Red Wings in a key game for both teams tomorrow night at PPG Paints Arena.
After Monday’s overtime loss in Toronto, coach Mike Sullivan said the Penguins are pushing hard to make the playoffs.
Sullivan says Sidney Crosby is leading the charge for the Pens, and it’s inspiring to watch.
