Mike Tomlin says the Steelers are not “overly thirsty” to fill any particular position in the NFL Draft this week. He and general manager Omar Khan met the media yesterday for their annual pre-draft session, and both sounded comfortable with what they’ve seen since January at the Senior Bowl, the Combine, Pro Days, and in player visits to the Steelers’ facility on the South Side.
Tomlin says the Steelers take a lot of things into consideration when making their draft picks.
Tomlin says there are a lot of voices providing input when the Steelers coaches and scouts evaluate talent, and new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has been a key part of the process.
Tomlin says the Pro Days set up at colleges such as Michigan are not just about the top players because the draft is not just about the first round.
With the Steelers holding the 20th pick in the first round, Omar Khan says there is always chatter among the GMs about trading up for a better prospect, as the Steelers did last year with tackle Broderick Jones, or trading down to get more picks.
Khan chuckled about watching Tomlin work the pre-draft events like the Senior Bowl and Pro Days, because Coach T can work the crowd.
After the 20th overall selection, the Steelers next pick will be number 51, in the second round.
