The IUP community is mourning the death of a longtime anthropology professor.
Officials with the Department of Anthropology announced the passing of Dr. Victor Garcia last Friday. Garcia started at IUP on December 29, 1990, and retired just two days after his 30th anniversary at the university. Along with several accolades, he was remembered by colleagues as someone they could count on when a project needed done.
Garcia was a distinguished university professor, Emeritus Professor of Anthropology, a Director of the Mid-Atlantic Research and Training Institute for Community and Behavioral Health (MARTI), and a mentor to several students and faculty members. Part of his principles as an educator included having students think “broadly and inclusively” while incorporating a calm, kind and humorous demeanor in his teaching methods.
