The Pirates yesterday swung a trade with the Red Sox, acquiring infielder/outfielder Enmanuel Valdez for 2024 19th round draftee Joe Vogatsky, a pitcher who has yet to make his pro debut.
The 25-year-old Valdez is a left-handed batter with a career .235 MLB average. Last season, he hit .214 with six home runs and 28 RBIs and was designated for assignment last Wednesday. He primarily played second base but also saw time at third and in left field.
The Pirates have not announced it yet, but various reports say they have agreed to a minor league deal with former White Sox number one pick Carson Fulmer, a right-handed pitcher who was the number six overall selection in the 2015 Draft. He threw for the Angels as a starter and reliever last season, going 0-5 while throwing a career-high 86.2 innings. He had an ERA of 4.15 and 81 strikeouts. For his career, Fulmer is 7-15 with a 5.38 ERA with the White Sox, Tigers, Orioles, Reds, and Angels.
Fulmer was claimed off waivers by the Pirates twice in 2020 but never pitched for them.
