BOYS BASKETBALL
The boys semifinals are set for the Heritage Conference “Road to the KCAC, Presented by First Commonwealth Bank” after Thursday’s action. Ironically, the two teams at the top of the Heritage Boys West both lost last night.
River Valley upset number one West Shamokin, 64-58 at West Shamokin. Four Panthers hit double figures, led by Bryson McDowell’s career high 16 points. Max Persichetti chipped in 13 while Jeremy Reed and Jake Pynos each scored 12.
At Marion Center, the Stingers ran by number two Homer-Center. Todd Marino has the story. (Marion Center 71, Homer-Center 44)
Portage wins the Heritage Boys East with a 63-39 win over Cambria Heights. The Mustangs tie Conemaugh Township with a 14-2 record but finish first based on a better record in crossover games against teams from the West.
Conemaugh Township is second after downing United 66-52. Ethan Matera led CT with 17, with Colin Dinyar and Stephen Stango each scoring 14. Connor Darr scored 13 for the Lions and James Kordish 12 for United.
Penns Manor beat Purchase Line, 63-47.
Conemaugh Valley topped Northern Cambria, 66-61.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
United’s girls beat Conemaugh Valley, 50-39.
The Indiana girls went on the road and clipped Latrobe, 62-57 in overtime in a critical Section game, overcoming a 9-point deficit in the second quarter, then erasing a 6-point Latrobe lead in the fourth quarter. Tied at 53 at the buzzer, Indiana scored the first four points of the overtime and extended the lead to eight before locking down the win by five.
Addy Hutton and Emily Betsinger both scored a career-high 17 points for Indiana and Julia Antonacci added 11. Emily Ferraro contributed 8, while Stella Stossel and Laken Kugler each tallied 5.
Indiana will be back in action at Fifth Street Gym on Saturday in a crucial non-section game with vital playoff seeding points against North Allegheny. Varsity tip-off for tomorrow is at 2:30pm.
ROAD TO THE KCAC
Monday’s Heritage Conference girls semis are not yet finalized. Cambria Heights is currently first in the East and would host West number two Penns Manor if they beat Portage tonight. River Valley wins the West and will host Cambria Heights, Portage, or United in the other game. Portage has a one-game lead over United for the second slot with one game to play. Portage plays Cambria Heights tonight while United takes on Conemaugh Township.
BASKETBALL ON-AIR
Marion Center’s girls visit Homer-Center tonight on WCCS, airing at 7 o’clock.
WRESTLING
River Valley improved to 14-5 with a 48-16 defeat of Greater Johnstown. Leading the way for the Panthers were Wyatt Taubler, Brody Houser, Brady Koffman, and Michael Wano by fall. They also had four wins by forfeit. The Panthers will host West Shamokin on Tuesday for the final dual meet of the season.
RIFLE
Indiana narrowly beat Penn Trafford on the rifle range, 790-44x to 788-46x. Top shooters for Indiana were Gavin Dicken with a 100-9x, Emelia Campisano with a 100-8x and Sarah Genchur with a 100-6x. Indiana’s record is 5-7 overall, 4-4 in Section 4 (tied with Armstrong for 2nd place).
The JV lost to Penn Trafford by a score of 382-14x to 361-6x. Top shooter for IHS was Wiley Campbell with a 98-2x.
