With the All-Star break winding down, the Pirates yesterday made the first in what is expected to be a series of trades ahead of the July 31st Major league trade deadline.
The Bucs traded all-purpose utility man Adam Frazier to Kansas City for career minor leaguer Cam Devanney, a 28-year-old middle infielder who was hitting .272 with 18 home runs with Triple-A Omaha this season. He has mainly played shortstop this year. Frazier played for the Royals last season before signing for a second tour with the Pirates in the off-season. He’s hit .255 with three homers and 21 RBIs in the ’25 season.
Devanney was assigned to Indianapolis.
The Pirates will make an addition to the 26-man roster before the season resumes tomorrow night against the White Sox at PNC Park. Chicago has named right-hander Jonathan Cannon to start tomorrow night. Manager Don Kelly has not named the Pirates’ starter yet.
MLB Pipeline analyst Jim Callis ranks the Pirates’ 2025 draft as the second-best among the thirty Major League organizations. Callis writes that “For the second straight Draft, Pittsburgh landed the player with the most pure talent in the Draft despite not owning a top-five selection.” He says the Bucs were “gifted” with right-handed pitcher Seth Hernandez. He also likes second round pitcher Angel Cervantes, third round catcher East Carmichael, fourth-rounder Gustavo Melendez, who he says is a “solid shortstop with a sneaky-good bat”, and he says LSU first baseman Jared Jones taken in the ninth round, “a flat-out steal” who “may have more raw power than anyone in the Draft.”
Callis ranks only the Orioles as having a better draft than the Pirates. After the Bucs at number two, the rest of the top five are the Rays, Rockies, and Red Sox.
