The Pennsylvania Senate last week approved legislation aimed at addressing the state’s ongoing nursing shortage by expanding support for education and training programs.
The bill would create a new grant program to help accredited nursing schools increase capacity, hire additional faculty, and improve training infrastructure. Funding would be awarded based on factors like graduation rates, licensure exam success, and job placement outcomes for graduates.
Supporters say the goal is to increase the number of qualified nurses entering the workforce at a time when hospitals and long-term care facilities are struggling with staffing shortages. They argue that strengthening nursing programs now will help improve patient care and expand access to health services across the commonwealth in the coming years.
The legislation now heads to the House for consideration.
