James D. “Jim” Bence, 78, of Homer City, passed away peacefully at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. Born Nov. 11, 1947, he was the son of the late James L. and Sally Bence.
Jim was a graduate of Indiana High School. Following graduation, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy Submarine Division for four years. After his military service, he began a long and dedicated career in coal mining with R&P Coal Company at the Lucerne 6 Mine. Over the course of a 40-year career, he spent half of his years with R&P Coal Company and the remainder serving the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a state electrical mine inspector.
Jim enjoyed spending time with his family and was especially proud of watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting events. He also loved time at camp, golfing with friends, and traveling. He was a member of the Homer City American Legion Post 493, U.S. Submarine Veterans Association, and the Red Barn Sportsman Club.
He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Twigg Bence, with whom he shared a wonderful 44 years together; his four children, James M. (Jodie), Jason (Bobbie Jo), Jill, and Hayden, at home; his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Linda Kimmell (Ed Park), Ed (Becky) Bence, and Doug (Margie) Bence, as well as many extended family members and friends.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday from 2 to 7 PM at the Bowser Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Homer City. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 AM at the funeral home. Pastors August and Aimee Twigg will officiate. Interment to follow in the Oakland Cemetery.
