It came down to the final inning and a late-game surge by Holy Ghost Prep, but the Indiana High Indians were able to hold them off and pick up their second-straight PIAA baseball championship. Here’s Pat Dougherty and Jake Slebodnick with the call of the final out.
With yesterday’s win at Medlar Field at Penn State, the Indians become the fifth program in PIAA history to win back to back baseball championships.
Charlie Manzi had a solo homer and pitched three innings in relief. He said in a post-game interview that the back to back championship made up for many members of the team not being able to play in the Little League World Series in 2020 when it was cancelled due to Covid.
Coach Dan Petroff was emotional after the win. The finale of the game almost mirrored what happened two years ago when Indiana lost in the state championship to Holy Ghost in the last inning. But this time, Indiana proved that every play mattered.
Indiana finishes the season 22-4 with back to back WPIAL and PIAA championships.
