The NHL owners yesterday unanimously approved the sale of the Penguins to the Hoffman Family of Companies. The sale by the Fenway Sports Group is valued at $1.75 billion, according to comments by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman to reporters in New York. The leadership structure installs Geoff Hoffman as the Penguins’ governor, with his brother Greg and father David, and Penguins president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas as alternate governors.
The Penguins’ preseason schedule was announced yesterday. The team will participate in the Detroit Red Wings’ prospect tournament, along with the youngsters from the Red Wings, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Dallas Stars September 12th through the 15th.
The Pens will then play two home games, September 21st against Buffalo and the 22nd against Detroit, before traveling to Columbus on the 24th and Buffalo on the 26th. The NHL regular season schedule has not yet been announced.

Another pre-draft trade yesterday, with the San Jose Sharks sending left wing William Eklund and two prospects to Ottawa for the ninth overall pick in Friday’s first round. The Sharks now hold the second, ninth and 27th picks in the first round.
And commissioner Gary Bettman said that the league is exploring putting a second franchise in Texas, with Austin and Houston as the potential targets. The league currently has 32 teams and most recently added the Seattle Kraken, who debuted in 2021.
