The Pirates and all of Major League Baseball will celebrate Roberto Clemente Day today, with all players wearing a number 21 patch on their uniforms and each club holding a “day of service.” The Pirates will all wear the number 21 tonight and past Clemente Award winners and this year’s nominees will all have the option to wear number 21 as well.
At PNC Park, Clemente family members will join the pregame ceremonies, and the Clemente Bridge outside the stadium will be closed all day for a block party being held on Federal Street. The first 21,000 fans attending the Pirates/Brewers game will receive a Clemente bobblehead commemorating his 3,000th career hit, the last of his career regular season hits before his death on New Year’s Eve, 1972.
This year’s thirty Roberto Clemente Award nominees, one from each team, includes Pirates second baseman Brandon Lowe. (See the entire list of nominees below)
On Pirates Insider on WCCS Sunday, general manager Ben Cherington said today is an important day for all of baseball.
On the field tonight, the Pirates enter the game against the first-place Brewers having to face Cy Young Award favorite Jacob Misiorowski (14-5, 1.95 ERA) with a bullpen game led by starter Lake Bachar (1-3, 3.52 ERA). It will be Bachar’s tenth appearance as a Pirate, his fifth as an opener. In that role he is 0-1 with a 2.61 ERA in twenty-and-two-thirds innings pitched.
The Pirates, at 75-75 on the season, are seven games back of the Padres in the race for the last National League Wild Card slot with twelve games left in the season.
