From IUP Sports Information
Junior basketball players Malik Miller and Lexi Griggs have been named IUP Athletes of the Week, announced Monday afternoon by the IUP Sports Information Office.
It’s the first career IUP weekly award for both student-athletes as they helped the men’s and women’s basketball programs get off to 2-0 starts to the 2018-19 season.
Miller’s big night came Saturday as he scored a career-high 24 points to lead eighth-ranked Crimson Hawks to a 70-67 win over 16th-ranked Virginia State in an early season top 25 showdown at the Kovalchick Complex. The guard shot 7-of-10 from the floor, making a pair of 3-pointers, and 8-of-9 from the foul line with five rebounds and four assists.
For the weekend Miller averaged 18.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists, converting 55.0 percent (11-of-20) from the field and 90.9 percent (10-of-11) from the foul line.
The highlight of Griggs’ opening weekend came in IUP’s 95-50 win over Alderson Broaddus Saturday, as the forward posted her first career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds in just 24 minutes. She shot 7-of-13 from the field, knocking down a 3-pointer, and had three assists, two steals and a block.
Griggs followed that up with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting with seven rebounds and four assists in 25 minutes Sunday, as the Crimson Hawks defeated Ohio Valley 101-62. She came out of the weekend with averages of 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists, shooting 61.9 percent (13-of-21) from the field.
